About 30 years ago, when I first set my mind to restoring core glass, it was merely an intellectual pursuit. But I soon became fascinated with the techniques and history of ancient glass, and though I originally thought this technique had limited potential, I soon discovered new ways to produce different effects, and I decided to develop it as a genre of glass art. Taking a second, closer look at core glass, I got the strong impression that these ruined works still held great potential. As a person brought up in modern Japan, I decided that I would try to revive this lost technique and carry on with a tradition from another culture. This wider view is an important element of my work.
