The common image of glass is heavy, sharp, rigid, and cold. But glass can also be soft, delicate, and warm. I search for ways to incorporate the latter qualities into my art. My current series was influenced by the delicacy of the "cage cup" of the Roman Empire and the softness and warmth of the Pate de Verre by the 19th century artist Albert Dammouse. What is interesting about this series in terms of form is the multiple layering and how a balance is struck between the contrasting cants and shapes of the different layers. Another interesting point is their color. I made sure to use colors that would not ruin the delicacy and softness of the piece. Important elements in determining what colors to use are an outgrowth of my many years living overseas--both natural colors (the sun, sky, sea, and plants) and artificial colors (buildings and fashion).
