It was inevitable that I chose to work with glass. Born into a family that has manufactured glass bottles for over 100 years, I regularly saw glass in melted form, and our livelihood came from producing a large volume of glass every day. Glass was not a material for creating works of art, but a raw material from which products were made. In my student days I learned about artistic expression using materials, and now, as I use glass for my artwork, I am objectively aware of and understand the common attractions of glass, such as its beauty and delicacy. Those things are just certain facets of glass, however, not its totality. I face glass as an equal, and I hope I am able to use glass--clear and true--to express myself.
